Puerto Rico: The Geography of the Northern Caribbean
|
The topical areas of study will include: physical geography (landforms, climate, geology and biogeography); early colonization; government; pre-Columbian native cultures; and the nature and the impact of colonization waves. Sites to be visited on the program might include:
- Old San Juan, monuments and walking tour;
- El Yunque, the only tropical rain forest within the U.S. Forest Service's system;
- The island of Vieques where the class will see first hand an active sea turtle nesting ground and a bio-luminescent bay;
- Colonial Ponce, including a visit to a mango grove;
- The central cordillera;
- The Arecibo Observatory; and
- The underground karst caves of Rio Camuy

The program offers students an interdisciplinary approach integrating sociological, anthropological, and historical perspectives to the study of Caribbean society and culture. Students will be introduced to key social-scientific concepts such as race, ethnicity, nation, culture, and their relevance (or irrelevance) in the attempt to understand Caribbean cultures and identities.
