Iceland: Renewable Energy, Technology, and Resource Economics
|
The program is divided into three components. In Reykjavik, students meet with politicians, industry leaders, and social activists about Iceland’s energy policy. In Akureyri, students study with leading engineers, physicists, and geologists. The last two weeks in the remote West Fjords, working in small communities to help develop an energy plan.

Svartarkot, culture - nature Understanding Global Heritage
|
Students will learn to evaluate and critique both image and textual sources and learn how to use these skills in deconstructing ‘heritage value’. Through the use of case studies and visits to Iceland’s heritage sites students will critically evaluate UNESCO’s World Heritage scheme as well as learning to apply an understanding of the key themes of Critical Heritage Studies, Authorised Heritage Discourses and Alternative Heritages in forming their own opinions of the role of the past in the present.

University of Iowa Exploring Healthcare in the Land of Contrasts

Program applicants will receive three hours of independent study credit for the experience. Individuals involved with the University of Iceland and the Iceland healthcare system will also provide guest lectures during the program

Svartarkot, culture - nature Grettir the Strong and Billy the Kid: Outlaws, myth and reality in Iceland and America
|
The most common outlaw material in Iceland will be read and interpreted, including medieval sagas, folktales and historical accounts, as well as the American material. Eric Hobsbawm's well known works on social bandidts and subsequent criticism of his hypothesis, from various points of view, will serve as a reference point, but main emphasis will be on the interplay between myth and reality.
