The purpose of this international program is to study the Danish social welfare system, compare it to that of the United States, and immerse yourselves, for 11 days, in the Danish culture by living with Danish human services students and professionals.

Students have the opportunity to take courses taught in English in a variety of topics including: pre-architecture and design (interior, furniture, textiles, ceramics, glass), humanities and social sciences, HIV/AIDs in Western Europe, international business, psychology & child development, medical practice & policy and nursing. Courses are designed for American students and award between 6 to 12 credits, depending on length of study (6-9 weeks). Study tours in Denmark and Europe are included.

The DIS Crossing Borders program is an interdisciplinary study designed for highly motivated students majoring in sociology, human geography, sociocultural anthropology, history, development studies, political science and related fields. Students can choose to take one or both 3-credit courses:
Session 1: Human Trafficking and Prostitution, with a three-day study tour in Denmark (law enforcement institutions, street level social programs, and NGOs).

Session 2: East Meets West: Migration and Emerging Identities, with a five-day study tour to Turkey (historical, religious, cultural sites, research institutions).

The HIV/AIDS in Europe courses, developed in cooperation with the University of Maryland, are designed for highly motivated students interested in pursuing careers in medicine and other health professions. They focus in HIV/AIDS from both a biological, medical, and public policy perspective, and sensitize you to political, social, economic and moral issues related to the disease.

Sustainability in Europe

Alternative energy, energy conservation, public transportation, urban planning, and ecologically and socially sustainable design - these are areas for which the Danes are famous. Come meet the people who pioneered wind-power and recycling - come see their buildings, their bikes, their streets, their homes, and their politicians. Get to know the links and tensions between environmental challenges and sustainable solutions, and the European perspective on best practices within urban development, waste management, energy conservation, and more.

The study tours in Denmark and Britain are tightly integrated into the coursework, offering hands-on experiences of the topics taught in class. They feature visits to Danish and European local community projects, NGOs, green technology companies, and governmental institutions, highlighting topics studied in class. Britain is in the forefront of sustainability initiatives and is currently building the world's largest windmill park at sea.

The DIS Architecture & Design programs combine intensive studio work with field studies, unique electives, and study tours across Denmark and Scandinavia. Observe and study high-quality structures and design while receiving side by side instruction with architects. This program will expand your skills and familiarize you with contemporary Scandinavian Design.

The Denmark program will last four weeks. It will make use of four different sites in Denmark. The program begins in Copenhagen, the second week Brenderup, students will stay in Skagen for two nights, the third week Vibrog and students will return to Copenhagen for the final week of the program.
