So, you want to learn how to speak Spanish and the classroom
at home just isn’t cutting it.
Sure, you’re learning the grammar rules – but you can’t conjugate on the
spot and you aren’t gaining sufficient experience speaking. You’re not alone; a lot of students
have trouble learning a new language within the comfort of their English
speaking university. The
solution? Study abroad! When it comes to learning a new
language, there is no substitute for full immersion.
If you stop and think about it, you will realize that you
don’t have to go all the way to Spain to immerse yourself in Spanish language
studies. Most teachers in the US
public school system actually focus on Latin American Spanish, so that is
probably what you are most familiar with anyway. You could go somewhere like Mexico, Ecuador, Peru or
Argentina and practice speaking with the locals there. You can enroll in any number of
programs and courses to help you stay focused on studying the language – but
you will find the real education comes not from the program but from your
surroundings. Over time, you can become
comfortable speaking without thinking, communicating with friends, and
traveling around. You might even
reach a point where it easier to come up with the Spanish slang than the proper
English… and that will be a moment to be proud of!
