Program Overview

Program Description:
The University at Albany's affiliation with the University of Cape Town (UCT) offers students the opportunity to enroll directly into regular university courses alongside native South African students. In this way, this study abroad opportunity provides integration into the university and fosters independence in our students - both of which enhance the overall experience.

Throughout its history, UCT has built and maintained a tradition of academic excellence that is recognized throughout the world. Its outstanding record in teaching and research and its international reputation as Africa's leading research university attract talented students from around the globe, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Study abroad students enroll in regular university courses at the University of Cape Town. As long as you meet prerequisites and basic qualifications set by UCT, you are able to enter any course offered at UCT in four of the six Faculties: Commerce, Humanities (including Social Science and Education), Engineering and the Built Environment, and Science. All courses are taught in English. You will be expected to work independently, using your class time as a beginning point and depending largely on individual study. Self-motivation and self-discipline are paramount to the success of each student. Students applying to study abroad at UCT must choose the courses they intend to take at UCT as part of the UCT application. Please select courses carefully, as it may be difficult to make changes later. It is important to remember that UCT's semester dates do not follow the traditional U.S. academic calendar. The First Semester at UCT corresponds with the spring semester in the U.S. and runs from early February to late June. The Second Semester at UCT corresponds with the fall semester in the U.S. and runs from early July through mid-November. Therefore, academic year courses at UCT begin in February and end in November. Please keep this in mind when selecting courses.

Setting Description:
The University of Cape Town campus is located on the slopes of Table Mountain. The buildings themselves are nestled among the mountain peaks, with the breathtaking Devil's Peak soaring above. Founded in 1829 as the South African College, the University of Cape Town is South Africa's oldest university. It became UCT in 1918 and moved to its current location, on Cecil John Rhodes' Groote Shuur Estate, in 1929. In the mid-1980s, UCT broke with government policy, ending its historic classification as a white university and adopting a policy of integration. Today UCT boasts more than 21,500 students, approximately half of whom are non-whites.
