; ; The Universidad de Salamanca, founded by Alfonso IX of Leon in 1218, is the oldest and most prestigious university in Spain. During the 15th and 16th centuries, it became one of the most advanced learning centers in the world. Many great figures of Spanish Humanism and literature, such as Fray Luis de Leon, Calderón, and San Juan de la Cruz, were educated in its halls. The Universidad de Salamanca continues this tradition of excellence to this day with a highly distinguished faculty doing research in 53 departments.; The university's 30,000 Spanish students have the opportunity to receive degrees in 58 different areas of specialty.
