International Issues in Nutrition

Program Dates: January 3 - 16, 2010
Graduate-level Nutrition and public health students will have the opportunity to examine the impact of migration on issues of community public health in Puebla, Mexico; a state of particular relevance to New York as more than half of Mexican immigrants in New York City are natives of Puebla. All students will attend lectures and seminars on issues of mutual concern, including understanding major factors affecting Poblano health, traditional health practices, and aspects of Mexico's general health care system. Students will also conduct field trips and fieldwork specific to their discipline. The program described here is a collaborative effort between faculty from the Universidad Popular Autonoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP) and NYU Public Health and Nutrition faculty.

This intensive three-week program offers students the opportunity to advance their Spanish language skills in a total-immersion environment. The program is based in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Known as the City of Eternal Spring, Cuernavaca enjoys year-round semi-tropical weather and is about a one-hour drive south of Mexico City. As the former ancient Aztec town of Cuauhnahuac, Cuernavaca is rich in history and has a population of over 500,000.

This seminar will offer cultural excursions, group discussion, lectures, reflections, and other activities. Seminar participants will have an opportunity to improve basic Spanish language skills through three hours of intensive, small group language study at the Universal Language School.

The State University of New York (SUNY) currently offers more than 400 overseas study programs in more than 50 countries: in North and South America, Africa, Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Programs range from 2-3 week intensive courses to a semester or academic year abroad. Courses are available in more than 100 subjects, ranging alphabetically from aboriginal studies and aerospace engineering to western philosophy and women's studies. While many programs focus on language learning and are conducted in the language of the host country, many others are conducted wholly or partly in English.
