Primate Behavior and Conservation

This course explores new world primate biology and behavior as well as threats to primate conservation. During the initial phase of the course, students will survey the natural history, biology, ecology, and behavior of new world primates through lectures and group discussions. Additionally, field exercises will allow students to observe primates and gain familiarity with research methods used by primatologists. During the second phase of the course, lectures and class discussions will examine the conservation threats facing primates throughout the world and strategies to mitigate these threats. Field exercises will focus on obtaining the ecological data that is critical for primate conservation research. Students will also participate in service projects aimed at promoting primate survival in the New World.

Marine Resource Management

Students can earn up to 4 credits in Marine Science through this experiential education course on which students study marine conservation and marine park management. Saba is home to the Caribbean's best and most extraordinary diving, from coral encrusted walls to breathtaking pinnacles that tower out of the ocean depths. Academic Treks College has teamed up with the world-renowned Saba Marine Park (SMP) to offer a one-of-a-kind program focusing on marine resource management and marine reserves, designed to safeguard marine environments while allowing for their sustainable use. Our studies are intertwined with world-class diving and adventure. You will live in environmentally aware eco-lodges nestled in mountain rainforests and aboard 50-foot yachts. Island hopping between St. Barts, Statia and Saba, we explore, compare and contrast three very different marine reserves and their unique approaches to conservation, tourism, research and resource management. Learn Reef Check survey protocols used by marine scientists worldwide and discover pristine reefs, huge wrecks and amazing biodiversity during the 18-20 dives you complete in the marine parks.

Tropical Marine Biology

Students can earn up to 4 credits in marine science through an experiential course which combines hands on marine studies, learning underwater research techniques, collecting data for the REEF Fish Survey Project, and completing a research project. Explore diverse Caribbean islands on a live-aboard voyage and earn multiple PADI scuba certifications (from beginner to advanced) all while learning about general marine biology, fish behavior, marine conservation efforts and future prospects.This course will examine the biology and ecology of tropical marine communities and illustrate research techniques and equipment that marine biologists commonly use.

Earn 2 credits in Recreation/Physical Education and your IYT Master of Yachts certification while exploring the Caribbean's most spectacular ecosystems. Learn passage planning, sail theory, navigation, and meteorology on this 600 mile sail training program across the Caribbean from St. Martin to Trinidad. The program is designed for those looking for a rare adventure that is rigorous and educational. Heading into our final port, you are an accomplished sailor. This course if focused learning how to teach the dive theory and dive skills learned during Divemaster training. Candidates will learn different methods to teach various materials and skill to students. Students will have a variety of opportunities to practice teach and receive feedback from their Course Directors. Feedback is constructive to help aid candidates learn effective ways to teach. With successful completion of this course candidates will be prepared to take the Instructor Examination which if successfully passed certifies students to teach PADI dive course from Open Water through to Divemaster.

PADI Divemaster

This course is the first level of dive professional. This course will teach you about the hard and soft skills required to become a dive professional. Academic topics focus on the following dive theory topics: Divemaster Conducted Programs, Supervising Certified Divers, Assisting with Student Divers in Training, Physics, Physiology, Equipment, Dive Skills and Environment, and Decompression Theory and the Recreational Dive Planner. Candidates will also bring their hard skills up instructor level demonstration quality during training. Candidates will focus on the 20 fundamental skills taught to open water divers. In addition, candidates will learn what it means to be a dive professional, the responsibility of taking care of some one underwater and the awareness to deal with complex situations.
