All students will enroll in two courses (EALC 331 and either EALC 198 or JPN 333): EALC 331 Studies in: Education in Japan (3 credits) Japan remains a beguiling mixture of old and new as it faces accelerating changes prompted by the economic challenges of globalization. It is the home of advanced technological development and of a global entertainment industry while retaining customs and rituals that date back to the 10th century. Education is central to the way a society prepares for the future. Through field trips we will examine how the changing dynamics of Japan’s educational system imparts values and molds social behavior to create the society of the future. In addition to field work and readings students will conduct a research project related to education in Japan. (Education includes all forms of social media.) Course requirements include active participation on field trips, and an oral and written report of the research project. EALC 198 Basic Japanese Language and Culture (1 credit) This course is designated for students with no previous Japanese language study. Students will learn basic Japanese phrases and simple conversation. JPN 333 Studies in Japanese Skills: Conversation (1 credit) Intermediate and Advanced Japanese language students will develop language skills through direct experience in interviews and guided practical applications on campus and in Hiratsuka City.
