When you first dreamt about studying to be a chef, you
probably pictured yourself learning how to make Boeuf Bourguignon in France or mastering the
art of homemade pasta in Italy. Or,
maybe you imagined yourself taking on heat and spice in the Caribbean. Those dreams are not as far from
reality as you might think. Study
abroad programs in the culinary arts are offered all around the world – and if
this is your field, applying should be a no brainer. After all, studying abroad is all about culture… and what is
more important to culture than food?
Local cultures have a passion for their own foods and
flavors that cannot be found anywhere else. As an aspiring chef, it is important for you to learn as
much about the flavors that inspire that passion as possible. By studying abroad in Italy, for
instance, you can buy produce from a nearby farmers market and taste first-hand
the difference between a tomato grown in Italy and a tomato produced in
California. You can have fun
immersing yourself in the culture while at the same time expanding your
culinary knowledge. Most
importantly, you can learn to love the ingredients the way the locals do, and
that love can translate into the dishes you make.
