Vietnam Program

Participants engage in educational activities while providing service in the community. These activities are tailored as much as possible to the student's major or academic interest and could include working in a community clinic or local nursing home, distributing food and clothing in poor, mountainous villages, or teaching staff at a four star hotel about American customs and language.

Vietnam Immersion

CET's Vietnam Immersion strikes a careful balance between Vietnamese language, Vietnamese Studies courses and service learning opportunities. It also emphasizes students' individual needs by offering course choices and independent study. During the fall and spring semesters, CET's Vietnam Immersion is a fifteen-week program based in Ho Chi Minh City and includes a ten-day study tour to north and central Vietnam. Throughout the program, students study Vietnamese language and undertake a required seminar that surveys contemporary Vietnam, a required independent study project or service learning placement, and one other core Vietnamese Studies class. For this class, students may pick from topics such as: Visual Anthropology & Media Studies, Modern Vietnamese History, Vietnam's Economic Development, The War with America, Vietnam's Environmental Issues and Vietnamese Literature. All of the special topic courses are taught in English by American or Vietnamese faculty.


Pacific Discovery
Overland educational travel through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam & Cambodia - cultural immersion, volunteer & community service, adventure education

A 2-month program traveling overland through the diverse and friendly Buddhist countries of Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, a melting pot of fascinating history, welcoming peoples, diverse cultures and dramatic landscapes. This program has a strong experiential education component, comprising hands-on volunteer work, opportunities for meaningful connections with local people, pushing personal boundaries, and gaining knowledge of Southeast Asia’s history, societies and environments, facilitated by our knowledgeable program leaders and is an excellent study abroad or gap year option for students or graduates wanting to be exposed to and immersed in cultures radically different to their own.

Cities in the 21st Century

A small group of students and faculty will travel to Sao Paulo and Curitiba, Brazil; Cape Town, South Africa; and Hanoi, Vietnam during the Spring Semester to explore issues related to urban planning, politics, economics, and environments (both social and ecological). Study in traditional settings is complemented by on-site comparisons of policy and social movements. Students will earn 16 credits over the semester.

Development studies

In cooperation with Oslo University College (Høgskolen i Oslo) AMARTYA offers a full semester course of Development Studies. The course takes place in beautiful Hoi An, Vietnam, and gives a broad interdisciplinary introduction to issues of development and globalisation as well as an introduction to Vietnamese and regional culture and society. Students and teachers are from all over the world.

Vietnam: National Development and Globalization

Interdisciplinary exploration of the Mekong Delta, including mangrove forests, shrimp farms, migratory bird habitats, freshwater swamps, and grasslands. Focus on cultural ecology topics such as sustainable development, contemporary social pressures on natural resource exploitation, and ecotourism.

Viet Nam:Delta Ecology and Resource Management

16 credits: Intensive Language Study:Vietnamese; Academic Seminar; Field Study Seminar, and four week Independent Study Project.

Students examine wetlands, soil, mangroves, shrimp farms, aquaculture, migratory bird habitats, freshwater swamps, and grasslands, and explore issues of sustainable development, pressures on natural resource exploitation, and ecotourism in Viet Nam and Cambodia. This program features lecturers and program support from Can Tho University, which is internationally recognized for its research on marine aquaculture and water management.

Kulturstudier offers a full semester course in Development Studies in Hoi An, Vietnam. The course gives a broad interdisciplinary introduction to issues of development and globalisation as well as an introduction to Vietnamese and regional culture and society.
