International Honors Program

IHP offers a unique set of theme-based, multi-country study abroad programs. Students study a particular theme in several different countries over the course of the semester, year or summer. The exploration of issues will involve direct contact and interaction with local experts, activists, educators, community members, public figures, and leaders of various government and community organizations. Students will take four classes per semester, earning sixteen credits. Students will augment classes with various site visits and interactive learning experiences.

The Multi-Country program to Mexico, Peru and Argentina gives students the unique opportunity to experience three completely different cities, countries and cultures in the course of one semester. Although the differences between these three cities will be immediately apparent to the students, this program offers students the chance to go beyond initial appearances and arrive at the heart of these cultures.

In addition to the academic coursework, students participate in a trip to Greece as well as a series of educational trips and cultural excursions within Cyprus. The excursions and cultural events ensure that students develop a relationship with Greek culture and enhance their inter-cultural competencies.

Classroom study will be supplemented by site visits in Greece, Italy, India and China to experience the cultural, historical and artistic heritage of these civilizations. SEA Semester

Studying the ocean and human interaction with the ocean, students undertake coursework ashore in oceanography, nautical science and maritime literature and history, followed by a practical component of hands-on marine science and blue-water sailing in the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean. Students are full participants aboard in the operation and navigation of a 134' brigantine with a scientific mission and ongoing student research projects. All programming is accredited and available for any major.

A small group of students and faculty will travel to Bangalore, India; Beijing, China; and Buenos Aires, Argentina during the Fall Semester or Sao Paulo and Curitiba, Brazil; Cape Town, South Africa; and Istanbul, Turkey during the Spring Semester to explore issues related to urban planning, politics, economics, and environments (both social and ecological). Study in traditional settings is complemented by on-site comparisons of policy and social movements. Students will earn 16 credits over the semester.

A group of approximately 30 students and faculty will travel to Tanzania, India, New Zealand and Mexico on a two semester program to explore issues related to globalization. Students will visit urban and rural landscapes and communities affected by globalization, and discover first-hand the realities of "development". Students will have the opportunity to meet some of the world's most important critics of development and globalization and to engage with people around the world organizing in a variety of social and environmental movements to build sustainable alternatives.
