As the poorest country in Europe, Moldova has ongoing economic problems, inadequate resources and disputes with neighboring Russia over pricing of energy supplies. Though not as well publicized as the fate of orphans in Romania, many of the same problems that faced children in Romania during the 1990s was mirrored here. Many families cannot afford to look after their own children so they are often placed into care homes or orphanages, which are both poorly staffed and under-funded.

Most volunteers work in a high school where students start to learn English at about ten years old. Your main focus is on teaching conversational English and the local staff are keen to have volunteers to help out. Moldovan students are enthusiastic to find out about life outside of Moldova as most haven't had the opportunity to travel and you will find yourself a popular addition to the local teaching staff.
