Mediterranean Center for Arts and Sciences MCAS Academic Program

The academic program at the Mediterranean Center for Arts and Sciences is based on the American university credit system. MCAS offers two full semester programs (from September to December and from January to April), two Summer Sessions (May to June and July to August) a 3 - week intersession program in January. In collaboration with John Cabot University, Rome and Florence University of the Arts, MCAS also offers two year-long programs in Classical studies and Art History. Rich in history, remarkable architectural diversity, and natural wonders, Sicily is a rich resource for the study of Ancient, later and contemporary Mediterranean cultures. | |||

This program brings students to four of the greatest cultures and civilizations that the world has ever known: Greece, Rome, India and China. The cumulative artistic, philosophical, religious, cultural and social output of these societies is staggering and has exerted a tremendous influence on the underpinnings of Western and Eastern civilization. The program aims to balance study of the historical aspects of these societies with a more modern appreciation of cultural and societal differences. We are entering a modern era of globalization where the United States, Europe and Asia will play important and complementary roles. | |||

The Semester in the Mediterranean is a program based on the beautiful Mediterranean island of Cyprus that combines a traditional immersion study abroad experience with educational travel to Greece, Italy and Spain, with a co-curricular focus on Mediterranean cultures. Students will experience Athens, Rome, Pisa, Florence, Venice and Barcelona on the travel component of this program. The travel component does not impact the classroom schedule and is combined with co-curricular material relating to Mediterranean culture. | |||

The CET Siena program is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of Italy's art heritage. The program takes advantage of the rich artistic treasures of both Siena and Florence, and all courses incorporate excursions to local sites. CET Siena is one of the few study abroad programs that uses Art History as its central focus while also offering other courses in area studies. The program welcomes not only art history and Italian studies majors but also non-majors interested in exploring Italy's art history, language, politics, and culture. There is no Italian language prerequisite. | ||||

Florence Liberal Arts, Language and Art Program: CAPA individual enrollment programs are designed to be fully inclusive and therefore affordable to all types of students. The University of Minnesota provides transfer credit for both courses and internships. CAPA courses are designed to be relevant to your study in Italy and Europe. The CAPA Art Center offers unique and interactive fine arts courses using Florence as their canvas. Students live in shared apartments or homestay accommodation and participate in internships and service learning opportunities, which allow them to live and learn among the local Italian people. | ||||

Students in every term are required to take Italian language and the Mediterranean History and Culture course. CET Sicily students will also take three electives during the fall/spring term and one in the summer term. Elective courses are offered in ancient and modern history, archeology, philosophy, art and architectural history and Italian literature, culture and politics. To help students become acclimated to living in Catania, students begin the Sicily program with three weeks of intensive Italian instruction in the fall and spring terms and two weeks in the summer. Advanced language students may also choose to direct enroll in one to two courses at the University of Catania for an additional fee, if they meet certain requirements.
