Studying the ocean and human interaction with the ocean, students undertake coursework ashore in oceanography, nautical science and maritime literature and history, followed by a practical component of hands-on marine science and blue-water sailing in the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean. Students are full participants aboard in the operation and navigation of a 134' brigantine with a scientific mission and ongoing student research projects. All programming is accredited and available for any major.

Stam Zervanos, Ph.D. of Penn State University. Dr. Zervanos has taught courses in biodiversity, ecology, evolution, comparative animal and mammalian physiology at Penn State. His research has focused on physiological ecology, with an emphasis on thermoregulation, hibernation and biological rhythms in such diverse habitats as the deserts of Arizona, tundra of Alaska, coastal islands of the eastern U.S. and rainforests of South America.

Two ESL volunteers teachers needed for work in the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos Academic Institute for the Arts & Sciences (GAIAS) is currently seeking two experienced ESL teachers to volunteer at its community college in San Cristobal. Teachers receive free housing and a stipend which covers 2-3 meals per day in exchange for their services. The position runs from June 3 December 12, 2004 with the option to renew the contract. Minimum requirements: Applicants should be native speakers of English. They should have a BA in Education or other related field OR have a TESOL certificate plus two years of experience teaching ESL to adults. There is a minimum time commitment of six months.
