University of Salamanca
The Universidad de Salamanca, founded by Alfonso IX of Leon in 1218, is the oldest and most prestigious university in Spain. During the 15th and 16th centuries, it became one of the most advanced learning centers in the world. Many great figures of Spanish Humanism and literature, such as Fray Luis de Leon, Calderón, and San Juan de la Cruz, were educated in its halls. The Universidad de Salamanca continues this tradition of excellence to this day with a highly distinguished faculty doing research in 53 departments.

The university's 30,000 Spanish students have the opportunity to receive degrees in 58 different areas of specialty. In addition, 7000 foreign students from all over the world take language and culture classes or classes with Spaniards. To further their studies, all students have access to the library within their department as well as to the Santa María de los Angeles Library and the General Library. These extraordinary libraries beckon scholars from around the world. For extracurricular activities the University of Salamanca offers the Juan del Enzina Theater, an art gallery, a choir, and an orchestra. On the weekends, many students take advantage of these opportunities in Salamanca.

Crossroads of Islam, Judaism and Christianity in Avila, Spain

The Crossroads program is designed for students with at least one full year of college-level Spanish who are looking for a true immersion experience in Spain. The program offers a broad introduction to both Spain's history and the questions of multiculturalism that increasingly occupy the world's center stage. Fall and spring students enroll in the Capstone Seminar (3 hours per week), an intensive Spanish Language and Literature class (6 hours per week), and two elective courses. Students wishing to take a heavier load may enroll in a fifth course. In addition to enrolling in CET's electives, students may enroll directly in courses at the University of Salamanca. During the summer term, students enroll in the Capstone Seminar (6 hours per week), Spanish Language and Literature (10 hours per week), and one elective course (6 hours per week).

Boston University's new program in Burgos offers students the opportunity to enroll directly in the University of Burgos (UBU), a modern university centered in a medieval complex of buildings that was once part of the Camino de Santiago. The program will provide an excellent opportunity for students who prefer to live and study in a smaller city where there are very few Americans and very little English spoken.
