Internships in Australia | Intern Abroad in Australia ProgramsYou know that obtaining an internship (or more than one) is crucial to building your resume and landing your first job after college. And you also may be thinking about studying abroad. So, why not combine the two and kill two birds with one stone? When it’s time to start thinking about internships, you certainly can’t beat doing Internships in Australia. Not only do you get amazing work experience in your chosen field of study, but working for an international company is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that gives you an edge over other applicants.

An internship abroad may help you stand out to potential employers who may be impressed not only with your experience in a global company, but also your willingness to leave your comfort zone. With today’s increasingly globalized economy, internships in Australia give you valuable intercultural skills and experiences that you will surely take with you in the future.

Why Internships in Australia?

Why not?! Although Australia may be physically located more than 9,000 miles away from the U.S., it’s a country where you’re more likely to feel at home. The main reason is that there is no language barrier. English is the primary language spoken Down Under, and although there are some unique slang terms to learn (“barby,” “mate,” and “Big Smoke” for starters), you’ll get the hang of it in no time, and soon enough you’ll be speaking like a local!

In addition to the lack of a language barrier, you’ll also feel at home in Australia with all of the modern conveniences and technologies just like home. Like Americans, Australians are also all about their tablets and smartphones. This is just one less thing to worry about when you’re moving thousands of miles away for an internship!

Although Australia has much in common with the U.S., Australia is a country brimming with cultural diversity, history, and sightseeing. And there is a lot to see and do for fun. Geographically, Australia is a diverse country, with beaches, deserts, forests, reefs, and national parks. During your down time, you’ll have a ton of options, from checking out the urban landscape to catching some rays on the beach to taking a trek through the desert.

What About the Weekends?

Yes, you’re there to work, but your overseas internship experience can’t only be about work without any time for play. After all, you’re spending several months to a year in one of the most fabulous countries in the world! And, don’t feel guilty about it either; part of what makes your experience abroad so unique is that it is away from home in a place unlike you’ve ever been. Much of what you remember when you come home will definitely be the times spent away from the office.

  • Sydney

Sydney is not only the capital of New South Wales, but also Australia’s most populous city. It’s a major city with various neighborhoods to explore and attractions to see and experience. Visit Sydney Harbour botanical gardens, or spend an afternoon at the beautiful Bondi Beach or Coogee Beach, known for its jagged shores. Or check out the shops, restaurants, bars, and live music in neighborhoods like Surrey Hills or The Rocks. Or spend an evening after work enjoying Darling Harbour, one of Sydney’s largest dining and entertainment districts.

  • Melbourne

Melbourne is the second-most populated city in Australia and is known for its artsy and European vibe. Explore a museum or arts and crafts show, or take in a theater performance.

  • The Great Barrier Reef

Being that The Great Barrier Reef is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, we’d say it’s a must-see. If you’re the adventurous type, there are a number of activities to partake in, from snorkeling and scuba diving to kayaking and white water rafting. And if you’re not the adventurous type, just taking in the incredible colors and views and Instagramming some photos makes it worth the visit.

  • Featherdale Wildlife Park

If you’re pursuing an internship experience in Australia, you must be a little eager to see some kangaroos and koalas. Play with koala bears, kangaroos, and other creatures from Down Under while learning about these incredible (and friendly!) animals. You’ll even get the opportunity to feed some of your new furry friends! You don’t get to do that during your typical internship experience! Remember to take lots of pictures.

FUN FACT: The world’s oldest fossil was found in Australia. Just how old? Only a mere 3.4 billion years old.[i]

Australia’s Largest Companies

Australia is home to a number of large corporations and is a leader in the fields of health, technology, and aviation.

Though it may not be quite the international business hub as that of London or Tokyo, Australia boasts an impressive list of large (and small) companies, perfect for internship experiences in a variety of fields. Following is a list of just some of the organizations Australia has to offer:

  • BHP Billiton
  • National Australia Bank
  • Commonwealth Bank
  • Rio Tinto
  • Telstra
  • Diversified Financials
  • QBE Insurance Group
  • Westfield Group
  • Coles Group
  • Qantas Airways
  • Brambles
  • Foster’s Group

Make the Most of Your Overseas Australia Internship Experience

One thing about an overseas internship is that it’s a big commitment and most often a costly one.
