Plus, during your school breaks, you might be able to travel throughout the U.S. to see some of its treasured sights. Studying abroad in the U.S. could be a life-enhancing experience!

Why Study in the US?

There are many great reasons to pursue your degree in the United States. First, if you’re studying English, you may use your experiences both in and out of the classroom to develop your language skills. Or, if you’re already fluent in English, you may enjoy an international experience without necessarily having to learn another language. Second, depending on your program and your school, you might be able to network with academics and professionals in your field. This type of opportunity to network and otherwise connect with professionals in various industries could enhance your career opportunities. Plus, given the diversity of the United States, you may be able to enjoy interesting adventures while you’re on school breaks. Here are some other great reasons to study abroad in the United States:

The Cultural Opportunities: The United States is incredibly diverse. It has small, medium, and large cities; mountain and coastal regions; expansive forests and plains; and a myriad of other geographical characteristics. These characteristics allow for a variety of types of experiences. Depending on your location, you might enjoy plays, museums, and historical monuments in metropolitan areas; you might hike, ski, and kayak in the mountains; or you might sink in and enjoy the hard work and slower pace of agricultural areas. Even things like music, art, and social norms vary by location. You can potentially explore a plethora of cultures while you live and study in the United States.

The Food: Because the United States is a melting pot of culture, you might enjoy a variety of cuisines while earning your degree. In more rural areas, you can feast on a staple diet of meat and potatoes (with some favorite traditional meals that include meatloaf, hotdogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, and mashed potatoes), or, in more metropolitan areas, you might feast on anything from Thai food and Greek food to Italian food. Mexican food is a favorite in many U.S. cities, and in some regions, unique and inventive health foods are also popular. Other U.S. staples include sandwiches, soups, and salads. Plus, in some areas, you can find these foods in affordable “food trucks” that sell delicious cuisine out of their restaurants on wheels.

The Opportunity: Earning your degree in the United States may give you the time you need to submerse yourself in community. You’ll likely meet friends and partake in popular culture as you go to movies, have coffee, play Frisbee, shop, and more. You’ll also likely get involved in community and campus groups and perhaps meet people in your community as you grocery shop, spend time at the park, and go for walks.

While you study in America, Consider:

  • Taking a road trip throughout your home state. No matter where you are, there’s likely something interesting to see in your home state. Do as the locals do and climb into a car to do some discovering.

  • Visiting New York City, San Francisco, and New Orleans. These are three of the United States’ most treasured and intriguing cities. Check out New York City’s Central Park, San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf, and New Orleans’ Bourbon Street.

  • Enjoying at least one of the United States’ beloved national parks. Consider exploring the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Zion, Everglades, or Great Smoky Mountains National Parks. Bring a tent to camp and marshmallows to toast!

  • Trying some of the United States’ more interesting foods such as fried chicken and waffles, fry sauce (a mix of ketchup and mayonnaise, a U.S. staple in and of itself), Twinkies (deep-fried in some parts of the U.S.), Rocky Mountain Oysters, or corndogs (with mustard!).
