Study abroad programs in Wales offer students a historical and beautiful setting to embark on new adventures. Throughout Wales, students will find friendly locals, dozens of colleges and universities, diverse landscapes, the largest collection of Impressionist paintings outside of Paris and believe it or not, 400 castles. The city of Cardiff was recently voted one of Britain's six "cities of elegance" which is a great option for students interested in a city setting. For those more interested in a natural setting, Wales is set against a mountainous backdrop and is home to beautiful beaches and coastlines.

Since Wales is home to dozens of colleges and universities, there are a wide variety of academic programs available for study abroad students. Programs are offered in mathematics, physics, music, psychology, religious studies, forestry, biology, and even marine biology (Bangor University is right on the coast and has an ocean-going research vessel!), just to name a few.

Studying abroad in Wales will never leave students at a loss for social activities. Students studying in Wales can sample the award-winning cheeses and indulge in the many food festivals, explore the 186 miles of beaches along the Pembrokeshire Coast, attend one (or many) of the 150 annual music events and festivals or watch Europe’s largest wakeboard festival known as Wakestock. Studying abroad in Wales not only allows students to enjoy local activities, but it also puts them in a convenient location to travel to nearby European countries such as France, Belgium, Holland, Ireland, Germany, Spain and Italy.

Living in Wales

Wales is part of Britain and the United Kingdom and is situated to the west of England. It covers just over 8,000 square miles which is roughly the same size as Massachusetts. While English is the national language in Wales, more than half a million people throughout Wales speak the Welsh language. This means that more than 20 percent of the population still uses the traditional language of Welsh in their daily life, allowing study abroad students the opportunity to learn a new language. The National Assembly for Wales is the political body made up of 60 elected Assembly Members which makes decisions affecting Wales. The currency in Wales is that of Britain in general, the pound sterling. Students packing for their study abroad trip in Wales should expect a moderate climate. Typically, Wales doesn’t experience extreme heat or extreme cold. May, June, July and August are the sunniest and driest months, and a raincoat and sweater will usually suffice for the worst of the winter weather.

Pre-Med

Studying abroad as a pre-med
student is an exciting opportunity to take a break from the rigorous of your
academic lifestyle on campus, without getting behind in your coursework. Get
out of the classroom and take some time away from your labs to explore the
world and gain meaningful life experiences that you can share in your medical
school applications. As a pre-med study abroad student, you have the
opportunity to examine public health and other health-related areas first-hand
in whatever country you choose to study. Maybe you want to study abroad in an
underdeveloped country where you can volunteer at clinics and help those in
need of medical treatment and medical education. Perhaps you want to develop
your pre-med skills in a sophisticated clinical setting where you can learn a
second language and study in laboratories with cutting-edge technologies.
Wherever you choose to study abroad, as a pre-med student, you can make this
your opportunity to discover the different lifestyles of health professionals and
their day-to-day roles in a different culture. Now is the time, as a pre-med student, to
study abroad and create a diverse, challenging and enriching resume that you
can be proud to share in your med school applications. With the clinical or
field study experiences you can gain while abroad, the opportunity to learn a
second language and the exposure to a new and different culture, your study
abroad experience will help you create a well-rounded application when it comes
time to apply for medical school.

Why Study Abroad in South Africa

Many people don’t know that South Africa is officially referred to as the Republic of South Africa. It is located at the southern tip of the African continent, and borders the countries of Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Swaziland. Lesotho is an independent closed society entirely bordered by South African territory.

With its beautiful, diverse terrain and range of wildlife, South Africa is home to a million-plus square kilometers of a variety of landscapes from spectacular coasts and mountains in the south to the grassland bush in the north. The large continent covers everything from the austere flats of the Karoo Desert to the subtropical beauty in Natal’s exotic beaches, topped off by the magnificent Drakensberg mountain range. Spend a summer, semester or year studying abroad in South Africa and explore this wild and diverse land for yourself.

With all of the beautiful sights to see and people to meet, students who choose to study abroad in South Africa won’t spend all of their time in the classroom. However, with the high quality educational opportunities, students are coming to South Africa in large numbers each year:

• According to the Open Doors data collected by the Institute of International Education, in 2010, 4,313 U.S. students studied abroad in South Africa.

• The number of international students at South Africa’s 23 public universities has quadrupled from 12,557 to 53,733 in 2006 according to figures from the national Education Department.

• In line with figures from other destination countries, around a third of foreign students are enrolled in distance education courses through the University of South Africa.

There is no doubt that the cultural and natural riches of South Africa are nothing short of magical, and even if the trip there is a hefty plane ride away, there are many students to vouch that it is worth every effort.

Historical Influence

South Africa is still both a developed and an underdeveloped country, and there is a palpable sense of change as the country forges a new identity. Despite all of South Africa’s troubles and history of Apartheid, it is now one of the most important, democratic countries on the African continent. Its political and cultural fortune can be said to have come full circle in 1994 when Nelson Mandela, the anti-Apartheid activist who was imprisoned for 27 years, was elected president of the country. Because of its political turnaround, students who are studying history or government will likely find their study abroad experience in South Africa to be very inspiring, but South Africa is about so much more than just politics and is a worthwhile destination for students of any major.

The Total Package

South Africa is famous for its broadly varied natural environment. Students can spend their time adventuring across the major cities such as Johannesburg, coastal Cape Town, the historic Pretoria and let’s not forget the ‘sun and surf central’ city of Durban.

Arguably the most popular city in South Africa, Cape Town is known to ‘have it all’ for study abroad students who are looking for entertainment, scenery, culture and more. The city of Cape Town really does have something for everyone to participate in from volunteer opportunities, to mountain climbing and pristine beaches with the great surfing, and extensive shopping and entertainment; the opportunities are endless!

Not only are there a variety of cities to explore while you study abroad in South Africa, but the memories and learning experience you take home with you are absolutely priceless.

Make a Resolution to Study Abroad

Public Transportation across Europe

Studying Abroad in Madrid

Checklists to Prepare for Your Study Abroad Trip

Documenting Your Trip After Studying Abroad

Studying Abroad in Rome

Applying Financial Aid to Study Abroad

Act like a local in Rome

Connect with StudyAbroad.com

Studying Abroad in Italy

Studying Abroad in Italy

Studying Abroad in Italy
