FRANCE
Angers Semester Abroad

INTRODUCTION
Angers, a dynamic city with a rich cultural heritage, is located 11/2 hour by train southwest of Paris, in the Loire valley. This bustling provincial city of 260,000 inhabitants has a great deal to offer students interested in experiencing French culture while improving their language skills.

The Loire Valley, most celebrated for its breathtaking chateaux, is also respected for its purity of the French language. Students of French will greatly benefit from a semester or year in this area.

THE SCHOOL

The Université Catholique de l'Ouest (also known as "la Catho" or l'UCO) is a private, catholic university located in the heart of Angers. There are two programs Truman students may choose from: Intensive French at the CIDEF (Center International d'Etudes Françaises), a program specifically designed for International students which allows you to enroll at any level in French from true beginners to very advanced students, and the Advanced French Language program for advanced language students which combines classes for International students and integrated classes with French students. This program is often referred to as the ERASMUS program, the name of a European Community exchange program.

COURSES
LE CIDEF: INTENSIVE FRENCH PROGRAMCIDEF is a program within the UCO that is designed specifically for international students. It offers a wide variety of courses, including language, business French, history, conversation, art history, classes on French politics and other topics. These classes are designed for students at all levels of French proficiency. CIDEF also plans several trips throughout the semester, including two ch‰teau tours and a trip to Mont St. Michel and St. Malo.

THE ADVANCED FRENCH PROGRAM

This program is recommended for students at an advanced level of French proficiency. Students in this program will enroll in regular UCO classes, integrated with the French students. This may seem intimidating, but it is a good experience and the best way to get a feel for the French university system.

Truman State University students, through a special arrangement with the UCO, are allowed to take specific CIDEF classes that are required for the French major or minor at Truman. Students are encouraged to take a language class, Français Langue Etrang&egravce;re. Students may also choose from selected CIDEF classes that may be used to satisfy French requirements at Truman such as, but not limited to, the following:

HOUSING AND MEALS
There are several housing options available for foreign students. While dormitories are available on a limited basis, most students live in either apartments or in French homes.

APARTMENTS
Some students prefer the freedom of having their own apartments, and this option is available for students studying in Angers. Renters insurance is recommended, and can be obtained through SMEBA, an office that provides insurance and other services for students. One SMEBA office is located on Blvd Roi Renˇ.

HOME STAY
This is the best option for those students who want to get a glimpse of French life. Home stays are arranged through the UCO, pairing students with French people who have a room for rent in their home. This option is a home stay, not a family stay. Some students have situations where they live with a landlord, who they see once a month to pay rent, and others become part of the family, sharing meals and watching TV together.
