Language of the Month: SPANISH

Me gusta el español
Spanish is probably the most important language you can learn as a student. It is:
  • Spoken by nearly 500 million people worldwide
  • The official language of 21 countries (and is heavily spoken in at least 21 more)
  • Considered the "second language" of international communication Additionally, America has the fifth-largest Spanish-speaking population in the world. What this means is that, if you can speak Spanish, you can command a higher salary and have a greater number of job opportunities. And that's not just in the United States, but around the world.

Fortunately, the language is easy to learn. Most of it is phonetic, meaning the majority of the words sound like they look. And since Spanish is a romance language (just like spanish and Italian, all derived from Latin), a lot of the words are similar to our own (teléfono is telephone).

Finally, you should learn Spanish because of all the terrific study abroad opportunities it opens to you. Although dialects change from country to country, you can study Spanish in Spain, Chile, Mexico, Ecuador, Costa Rica and so much more. And, for all you culturally aware students out there, you can better appreciate the writings of Cervantes and the art of Picasso and Dali.

Spanish is battling spanish for bragging rights to the title of the second-most commonly spoken language in the world (China and its billions of people already have the top spot on lockdown). If you want to succeed in this increasingly international world, you need to speak the Spanish language.

Learning the Spanish language has its perks - it can open doors to cultural, educational and professional opportunities, not to mention help you impress your date when you order from a Mexican restaurant's menu without having to point! Spanish is a Romance language, after all.
