Program Overview

Program Description:
Arrive Date: 6/30/2013 End Date: 7/29/2013

This program is designed to give musicians and non-musicians an introduction to the music and culture of Latin America. Buenos Aires is one of the largest Latin American cities, with a vibrant cultural life. The music scene is particularly lively in the city, with the best tango shows anywhere, really active rock and roll (in Spanish), folk and tropical movements, and some of the best Opera performances in the world at the renowned Teatro Colón. Students will experience the music directly and will interact with performers and composers, developing relationships and exchanging views and perspectives, not exclusively about music but rather about the culture at large.

Buenos Aires is the cultural mecca of South America. In the last few years there has been a tourist boom driven in part by the extremely advantageous exchange rate (three pesos to a dollar). Students go to Buenos Aires for the urban experience, the rich cultural life, the inexpensive and excellent food, and the very active night-life. Alternatively called “the city that never sleeps” or “the Paris of Latin America”, Buenos Aires is a cosmopolitan and diverse metropolis (ten million inhabitants at least) that merges the European and the Latin American traditions. Restaurants, theaters and cafes are opened until late hours of the night and streets are always crowded. Neighborhoods have very different cultural identities that you will be able to explore by
