Program Overview

Program Description:
hesis Option The thesis option prepares students for future work in consulting, governmental agencies, industry, or doctoral studies. Students may focus their studies in one of several emphasis areas. This course of study includes a research component and culminates in a thesis that represents original research. Degree Requirements A program of at least 30 credit hours of approved coursework and research. No more than 50% of the credit hours can be at the 500 level. At least 15 credit hours of CEE approved graduate coursework (500 level courses and above) to include Research Methods (CEE 500). Independent study (CEE 691) and non-thesis research (CEE 788) are not applicable toward the thesis option. At least 6 credit hours of thesis research. No more than 6 credit hours of thesis research count toward degree requirements. A satisfactory thesis based upon individual research. Non-Thesis Option The non-thesis option allows students to take advanced coursework to support their professional development. Students must complete at least 33 graduate credits as shown in the following table. Degree Requirements A program of at least 33 credit hours of approved coursework, of which no more than 3 credits may be from CEE or CM 691, 788, 790, 791, 798, or CP 697. No more than 50% of the credit hours can be at the 500 level. At least 20 credit hours of CEE approved graduate coursework (500 level courses and above). Eligibility Applicants must satisfy the minimum admission requirements of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Graduate Education Office. (See general requirements for graduate admission.) Students who hold a BS degree in civil or environmental engineering from an ABET-accredited program and who satisfy all admission requirements may be accepted into the MS civil engineering programs. Admission is competitive and the achievement of minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Students with engineering degrees in areas other than civil or environmental engineering will be required to complete necessary background courses. Outstanding students with non-engineering baccalaureate degrees may qualify for admission to the graduate civil engineering program, with the understanding that they must take specified background courses as needed. Requirements:
• Complete the application format on our Graduate Education website. • Pay the $35.00 application fee. • Official transcripts from all U.S. institutions attended, including evidence of your bachelor’s degree if applicable. Transcripts must be mailed directly to SDSM&T by the issuing institution. Email copies are not accepted. A GPA of 3.0 is recommended; students with exceptional ability may apply with less than 3.0 GPA. • One page statement of purpose/personal statement of goals and research interests. • GRE score report: required . The SDSM&T school code is 6652. Scores of 50% or higher are recommended; strong quantitative scores are expected. • Three letters of recommendation. Should be submitted at the time of the online application. However can be submitted via email or postal mail.
International Requirements:
• Third party foreign transcript evaluation for all foreign institutions attended, including evidence of your bachelor’s degree if applicable. Effective August 15, 2012, SDSM&T requires a course-by-course evaluation report sent directly to us from the evaluating institution. We will only accept evaluation reports from Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (ECE) or World Education Services (WES). If you use ECE, order a catalog match report. If you use WES, order a course by course report. • Evidence of English proficiency, with the exception of applicants from countries where English is the native language. Applicants who have a prior degree from a university in the U.S. may be considered for exemption. Note that Engineering Management will only consider applications meeting the upper level score criteria.
