Program Description:

Art History in the 21st century is an ever-expanding discipline, marked by interdisciplinary cross-overs, varied and competing methodologies, and a huge range of objects of study that can break through the boundaries of the traditional notion of ‘art’. Through our MRes programme we aim to provide students with the means to undertake, at post-graduate level, art-historical investigation and research into a specific topic of their choosing. The research interests of the Art History team at Plymouth University are very broad ranging, and we are pleased to offer guidance to students interested in exploring issues as diverse as authorship, subjectivity, reception studies, cultural and gender identity, and museological practice MRes Art History can be taken either full time over 12 months (October to September) or part time over 24 months. The programme comprises three assessed modules: • Research methods in art history (30 credits) • Research in the arts and humanities (30 credits) • A masters thesis or approved research project (120 credits). Full-time students take the research methods in art history module in term one, the research in the arts and humanities module in terms one and two, and their thesis across the whole academic year. Part-time students take the two taught modules in year one and carry out their thesis in year two. The thesis is taught via one-to-one supervision during term time and through agreed provision up to final submission in September. Students are also encouraged to attend seminar groups in a variety of humanities disciplines, and the facultywide postgraduate training courses open to all. Programme content We will help you to ground your chosen project in the latest theoretical and conceptual approaches in Art History and other related disciplines. This programme explicitly embeds training in the skills identified by the Joint Research Councils, and the Arts and Humanities Research Council in particular, to prepare graduates for MPhil/PhD programmes. All students are expected to attend the regular Art History research seminar series for staff and postgraduates.

Normally a 2:1 or above BA (Hons) degree in Art History or a related subject; or an equivalent degree from overseas. Evidence that you are ready to pursue your proposed project.
