We at StudyAbroad.com believe this is an inspiration, and would like to share it with all of you. We are proud to be a part of this great community of study abroad advisors.

The University of New Orleans' Study Abroad Programs Have Risen from the Rubble and Are Seeking New Partners!
From Irene Ziegler, Program Coordinator

Even though Hurricane Katrina swamped much of University of New Orleans's (UNO) campus, devastated the homes of many of its faculty and staff members, and upset the Fall semester for all of its students, the university is up and running and so are its study abroad programs. Thanks to generous offers from many US universities as well as UNO's partner institutions abroad, students have started their semesters and years abroad.

"We are humbled, proud and incredibly grateful to our colleagues in the U.S. and abroad for the support and assistance they have shown to us and our students during this crisis," says Alea Cot, Director of UNO's Division of International Education.

Building on more than 30 years of experience in international programming, UNO's study abroad coordinators were not about to give in to the difficult work conditions the aftermath of Katrina presented. Working from laptop computers and internet cafes all over the country, they are actively engaged in planning their international programs for 2006, which will all take place as planned. However, this year more than ever, UNO is relying heavily on its existing partners and is seeking new support from other universities who may want to partner with UNO on its well established, award-winning study abroad programs.

In 2005, almost 500 students from all over the US studied abroad with UNO in Innsbruck, Austria; Montpellier, France; Madrid, Spain; Prague, Czech Republic; San Ramon, Costa Rica; Greece and the Greek Islands; and separate programs in Rome, Regello and Brunnenburg, Italy. All of its programs are open to non-UNO students, and all credits are transferable to home institutions. An overview of all programs can be found at http://www.unostudyabroad.com.

If you are interested in a partnership with any of the University of New Orleans' Study Abroad programs, please contact Alea Cot at amcot@uno.edu.

NAFSA Region VII Advisors

One of UNO's study abroad advisors and program coordinator, Irene Ziegler, will participate in the upcoming conference in Birmingham, AL. She would be happy to meet with any of you to discuss a potential partnership or other collaboration ideas. Please e-mail her at iziegler@uno.edu.

Above Transferable Credits Help to Make Friends to the USA
By Dr.Alfonz Lengyel

In 1990, the Fudan Museum Foundation in collaboration with Xi'an Jiaotong University, and the Archaeological Research institute of Shaanxi Province, established the Sino-American Field School of Archaeology (SAFSA). Since c. 1906 China was closed for foreign archaeologist, SAFSA was the first foreign group which had a permit to excavate in Xi'an together with Chinese archaeologists. Presently more foreign groups are excavating under Chinese supervision.

The basic principle of the school is not only the summer archaeological practice, but also a good will gesture toward the Chinese people. Through archaeological fieldwork, we want to build up a mutual respect and pave the road of further peaceful and prosperous collaboration.

There are a great number of foreign specialists on Chinese art but until 1990 none of them excavated in China. Through the field school of SAFSA, the participants could establish under the umbrella of SAFSA future contacts with leading Chinese archaeological experts. In China every program should be attached to a "unit". SAFSA within Xi'an Jiaotong University is a unit. The mission of SAFSA is to exchange methodology and to teach the future generation of American or foreign archaeologists who want to specialized or just gain an exposure in Chinese archaeology.

The program of SAFSA is an archaeological practicum, and not a spectacular campaign. In China, because its rapid building programs, except some monumental excavations, the concentration is on salvage archaeology. SAFSA helped to unearth a late prehistoric village from the matrimonial Yangshao culture. During other campaigns, SAFSA unearthed great many built tombs from the Qin and Han Period. One tomb was accidentally discovered in the perimeter of Xi'an Jiaotong University, which dates back c.50 BC. On its barrel vault, it was painted the first Chinese Sky-map which up to now was discovered.

From the Eastern Han period (c.50 AD), in a tomb of an officer we discovered a child's secondary burial. The child died earlier and re buried with the father. SAFSA helped also to unearth one of the Treasuries of the First Emperor of China ( r.221-210 BC.). It was already robbed and burned in antiquity.

Furthermore SAFSA helped to unearth the Mausoleum of Han Emperor Jing Di, and that of Li Xian, the grandson of the only Chinese woman Emperor Wu Zetian, and the Han Dyn. city of Yang LingYi. In addition to field archaeological methodology, the participants are studying the site conservation and preliminary restoration, in the laboratory, which was given by the Germans. SAFSA trying to persuade the US Government, US companies working in China, and individuals to donate an earth resistively station to the Shaanxi archaeology Institute in Xi'an.

In Search of a Few Good Bloggers:

StudyAbroad.com is looking for four great study abroad students to take part in http://www.BlogAbroad.com, a living, breathing study abroad handbook. College students who are studying abroad chronicle their adventures via an interactive weblog, or blog. Anyone can read and respond to the stories the "bloggers" tell, and the bloggers can then respond to them, creating an unparalleled opportunity for students to learn first hand what it is like to study abroad before they go off on their own adventures.

We have now had two successful seasons of this advocacy project and are about to start our third.

Today we start accepting student auditions. We are looking for three study abroad students as well as one international student studying in the U.S. to tell the world what it is like to study abroad. If you believe you know of a student who is perfect to do this, please refer them to http://www.blogabroad.com/audition.html. They must answer a few questions and write a 250-300 word essay. If we choose them to blog abroad, they will earn $500 plus a StudyAbroad.com prize pack and will have their writing read by hundreds of thousands of people.

This is a great opportunity for your students and your program. Please help us advocate for international education by sending your students to http://www.blogabroad.com/audition.html today.

We are also looking for advisor articles for our bi-weekly online newsletter. If you would like you and your program to be featured in this newsletter as well as on the BlogAbroad.com website, please e-mail Kim@blogabroad.com with an article or idea.

Government Run International Education Week Strives to Bring Countries Together

StudyAbroad.com Celebrates by Helping Students Travel Abroad

While news of war and unrest may dominate the media, the U.S. Departments of Education and State participated in a joint effort to promote multiculturalism and international education via International Education Week (IEW) through five days of global events and conferences that started November 14.

StudyAbroad.com, the number one online resource for study abroad information, sees IEW as an ideal chance to spread international understanding through education, an often overlooked source. The website is celebrating IEW by running a sweepstakes in which a grand prize winner will have a chance to study in a foreign country.

"Studying abroad is one of the most effective forms of foreign relations," said Mark Shay, president and CEO of Educational Directories Unlimited (EDU), the company behind StudyAbroad.com. "Sending our students abroad and accepting other countries䴜 students into our schools is a perfect way to spread cultural understanding and acceptance."

He went on to say, "If a student has a valuable experience in your country and takes that experience back to his or her homeland, there is the potential to dispel negative myths and stereotypes held by the country's citizens. The more opportunities a country has to present its true human side as opposed to the often misguided beliefs held by other countries, the more chance it has to find partners and friends in the world."

StudyAbroad.com has been promoting international education for 10 years. Their latest advocacy effort is BlogAbroad.com, a website using Web logs to chronicle the adventures of three American students studying abroad and one international student traveling to America. The website also runs yearly student sweepstakes and contests for study abroad advisors.

This year's sweepstakes will give a student $1,000 to attend SUNY New Paltz's fall semester 2006 in Wellington, New Zealand, with $500 worth of airfare coming from StudentProspector.com, another EDU website.

"This is our way of trying to help the cause," said John Duncan, the manager of StudyAbroad.com. "By helping a student travel abroad, we are doing our part to create a more internationalized world. When an American student goes abroad, he or she realizes that not everyone from that country thinks and acts a particular way, and the people from that country realize that not every American thinks and acts a particular way. There is diversity everywhere. Understanding that is an important step in creating good foreign relations."

To enter the StudyAbroad.com sweepstakes, go to http://www.studyabroad.com/sweepstakes/. The deadline is April 1, 2006. A grand prize winner will be chosen at the end of March. Ten runners-up will receive a StudyAbroad.com prize pack including a StudyAbroad.com T-shirt. This sweepstakes is only open to students who are in good standing at a U.S. institution and who are over the age of 18. Entrants' information will be automatically shared with the other sponsors. Other restrictions apply.

IEW was established by the Clinton Administration in 2000. During November 14-18, 2005, campuses, embassies and communities were encouraged to hold activities celebrating international education and diversity. For more information, go to the Department of Education and the Department of State's official website, http://iew.state.gov/.

Tech Tips:

By John Duncan, Project Manager of StudyAbroad.com

While we appreciate each and every recommendation to use our site by advisors, here is a factoid for better usage.

When advising a student in search of a study abroad program, one of the key areas to assess is the student's language skill. If they are primarily an English speaker you might not recommend Spain, for example. But to use Suffolk University Madrid Campus and Universidad San Pablo-CEU as an example, some foreign based universities do offer a full curriculum in English.

Please ask the student to use StudyAbroad.com to pull a top 5 list of desired locations. Scrolling through the program listings can help determine which countries offer classes taught in English.

If you come across a helpful tip for navigating StudyAbroad.com, please contact Matt Ulmer at mulmer@edudirectories.com. To get a newsletter full of helpful tech tips as well as technology's place in the current education world, please go to http://www.eduinsight.com/.
